Backyard swimming has long been a summer staple, but as the cost of in-ground pools continues to climb, industry professionals say more homeowners are looking for alternative ways to cool off at home. That shift is driving a glow-up for above-ground pools. Once dismissed as the cheap, less attractive option, they’re now being integrated into decks, enhanced with landscaping and designed to echo the look of in-ground pools at a more accessible price point.

The stigma around above-ground pools is outdated, says Nick Deck, store manager of Islander Pools & Spas in Colonie.

“Many of these pools are so elegant and modern that they elevate the appearance of a backyard,” says Deck.

Pool engineering meets design

Advancements in materials are a big reason why above-ground pools are having a moment. Structural components that were once primarily steel or aluminum are now increasingly made of resin or composite, offering durability without rust or oxidation.

One standout innovation is Latham Pools’ Radiant panel pool, which combines insulated aluminum panels with installation. Deck notes that this pool is unique in the industry, with two-inch-thick insulated walls that allow it to be recessed 2-3 feet into the ground, creating a semi-in-ground look without retaining walls. Seamless decks can be built right up to the pool, and it can even be installed into a side hill.

“More people now have the option to have a pool because this particular pool can be built into any topography,” says Deck. “If someone has a 3-foot slope, they can put it right into a side hill and backfill against it.”

Latham Radiant panel pools have been recognized as pioneers of the semi-in-ground pool category, says Collin Sirco, vice president of operations at Latham Pool, the largest designer, manufacturer and marketer of in-ground residential swimming pools in North America as well as Australia and New Zealand. He adds that the evolution of above-ground pools has been dramatic over the past few decades.

“Above-ground pools have evolved from simple, utilitarian structures into highly engineered products that closely resemble inground pools in both performance and appearance,” says Sirco. “Early advances focused on stronger walls, vinyl liners, circulation systems, and safer designs, while later decades emphasized aesthetics by introducing decorative wall finishes, patterned liners, resin components, and improved liner-hanging systems that allowed pools to better integrate into residential landscapes.”

Sirco highlights that Latham’s Radiant panel pools can be installed fully above-ground and semi-in-ground, as noted, or even completely in-ground depending on the backyard layout. Shapes and finishes have expanded beyond traditional round or oval forms to include freeform and rectangular.

“This flexibility helps the pool feel like part of the overall outdoor living space, not just a standalone feature,” adds Sirco.

Pool decking trends

One of the most effective ways to elevate an above-ground pool is through smart decking, says Jodi Lee, senior vice president of marketing for Trex Company, a leading composite decking company. Composite decking, in particular, is especially suited for pool surrounds because it is low-maintenance, resistant to rot and warping, and engineered to handle heavy foot traffic and exposure to moisture.

Quarter-wrap decks, which frame only a portion of the pool perimeter, are especially popular.

“It creates a natural transition from yard to water, helping the pool appear less ‘add-on’ and more like a built-in feature,” says Lee. “At the same time, it offers practical benefits — providing easy entry and exit, along with just enough space for a couple of lounge chairs or a small seating area without overwhelming the yard.”

Multilevel layouts are also a key trend in outdoor living, says Lee. Layered decks make small backyards feel larger and allow multiple activities to coexist — lounging, dining, entertaining— without the space feeling cramped.

“Tiered designs are also incredibly functional, making it easy to integrate features like a pool and hot tub within the same footprint while still giving each its own distinct space. Plus, the added structure can create opportunities for built-in storage — perfect for keeping pool accessories organized and out of sight,” Lee says.

Design trends are also influencing deck options. Warm, natural tones such as Trex’s “Biscayne” brown are gaining popularity, replacing the cooler grays that have dominated in recent years.

Another trend is mixing materials — combining stone, composite, wicker, and metal — or using varied board widths to create architectural dimension.

Aesthetics aside, decks also contribute practical benefits, says Lee, like reducing mud and grass entering the pool and offering a flat, stable surface for entry and exit. Modern materials and engineering allow these decks to coexist seamlessly with features such as hot tubs or patio areas, creating an outdoor living environment that feels intentional and resort-like.

Pool maintenance, cost, longevity

While design upgrades are a major draw, the appeal of today’s above-ground pools extends to cost and practicality. Most above-ground pools last between seven and 15 years, while high-quality resin or aluminum models can last two decades or more with proper care.

“Today’s above-ground category blends the affordability and accessibility that defined its origins with in-ground-style construction, versatility, and long-term performance, reflecting how far materials and design have advanced,” says Sirco.

Maintenance is relatively straightforward, though consistent attention to water chemistry, circulation and routine cleaning remains essential, adds Sirco.

Above-ground pools also give homeowners a high-end experience without the in-ground price tag. The median installation runs between $7,000-$10,000, compared to the $50,000+ of an in-ground pool, Deck says. Semi-in-ground options, such as Radiant-style designs, start closer to $14,000 but still offer significant savings.

In today’s market, above-ground pools present a compelling alternative to in-ground installations, says Deck and for those considering one, timing matters.

“You can have a high-end pool in your backyard for the cost of one vacation,” says Deck. “Every day can be a vacation in your backyard.”
