I got the aquarium for 15$ at Goodwill, pea pebbles for like 7$, sphagnum moss for like 5-10$, and Coco Core type soil for 10$ All the plants were sourced wild, after heavy washing, and I collected about a dozen pill bugs! Wood I also got outside and roasted. Got the lights on sale for like 5 bucks, and used a Dollar tree craft mesh for the drainage! I have a small amount of springtails in there as well, that my friend donated to me.
I did all of this in a night and I've never had a terrarium before! Thank God for Chat GPT (sometimes?)
Are there any recommendations you guys have? Is there anything here that might be bad?
I am worried about the moss, it hasn't rooted at all yet and I had to carry it around moist in a towel for a while before I got home, but otherwise it's been great!
I've had this baby for about a week now and the only thing that I had mold on was those barely dead leaves next to the moss. I only put them in there because I was told that pill bugs need debris? The pill bugs are definitely the thing I'm worried about the most.
Tldr: First time terrarium, got lucky and started with about under $50, any advice?
