This looks like Bald Cypress (normally called Swamp Cypress in South Africa) – Taxodium distichum.
Was this Stellenbosch or Kirstenbosch?

This is definitely a Swamp Cypress! It’s at the Stellenbosch Botanical Gardens and the original artist that trained the tree is Rudi Adams! Learnt everything I know from him before he passed.
