I’ve got a zoysia lawn in central Texas. These tan patches are only visible in the days after mowing, then the grass grows enough to cover with green. Any idea what these are?

You should level your lawn in a few months with sand to help mitigate this. The mower is dipping and scalping your lawn in low spots. The lawn comes back and then it happens again.

I’ve started using a manual reel mower and I don’t have this problem. I’ve got a new Bermuda lawn in SA so haven’t had a chance to level yet.

Sharpen the blades and raise the blade up a notch or two. Alternative is to keep same height of cut but do it 2-3x as often

I have Zoysia on the east coast. Same tan appears if I scalp a spot, or leave too much thatch behind. Mine needs to be dethatched every other season. I can leave it, but will have bare spots till July if I don’t remove some thatch.
As for the height, I cut at 1.5″ every 7days, 5 days when shes growing fast. Lumpy areas will tend to get scalp circles. Someone else mentioned sand, definitely will help. A level yard cuts lower. But yeah, I adjust to 1.75″ over those areas.
Gotta say, I love Zoysia, & how low it can be cut. I’ve seen it down to an 1″ & thriving, although that was a perfectly flat & manicured lawn that used the fancy low cut mowers. But it is possible.

You’re scalping it. Lower your blades one notch, mow the lot. Then raise your blades up a notch (ie back to normal) and mow fortnightly at least at the new height
