With summer fast approaching, you may be looking forward to spending more time outside in your garden. There’s no time like the present to start getting your garden in shape for summer.

April is the perfect time to begin some crucial jobs which could make a huge difference to your outdoor space – but only if you start them before the end of the month. Saga Magazine says you should lay compost in your flower beds now to prevent weed growth and trap moisture.

It says that if you have access to compost, you should lay down a 10-15cm (4-6in) layer of compost over all your ornamental beds.

Pauline McBride of Sussex Prairies Wild, told Saga: “This is a great way to trap moisture in the soil, prevent weed growth, help the environment and make your border look beautiful.” She adds that it will also save you a lot of summer weeding.

Making your own compost is one of the simplest and easiest ways to improve the quality of your soil, Pauline says. If you don’t have your own, you can plan out a space now and add your garden and kitchen waste to it this year for use next year.

But this is not the only crucial April job that’s been recommended.

You should also make sure to sow perennials for summer colour. If you’re planning on planting delphiniums, verbena or linaria – now is the best time.

These flowers will add colour and character to your garden and you can enjoy them for over a year once they grow.

RHS says gardeners should expect the inevitable April showers this month but with sunny days too, you should turn your attention to your veg plot, if you have one.

It adds that April is an exciting month as it’s the first time you’ll start to sow outdoors this year. But, it warns you should watch out for frosts and keep any tender plants indoors for now.

By starting now in your garden, you’ll be able to ensure your outdoor space will be looking its best by the time warmer weather rolls around.
