MIRI (April 19): What started as a gardening activity on Saturday turned into a huge bush fire that affected over 25 hectares along Jalan Acorus, near Miri Airport.
The Miri Central fire station in a statement said a team was deployed to the location about 13km away following a distress call around noon.
“Upon arrival at the scene, the operation commander reported that the bush fire was caused by gardening activities behind an old storage hut.
“Using water from a nearby hydrant, firefighters took about five hours to extinguish the flames,” it said.
Assisting in the operation were Miri Airport firefighters and personnel from the meteorological office and MAB Agriculture-Horticulture Sdn Bhd.
The statement added that according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), the thick smoke from the bush fire did not disrupt aircraft movement.
The firefighting operation concluded at 6.55pm.
