It looks like this area used to be covered by deck, and the siding below the deck line was damaged as a result of the deck being up against it. Now the area is filled with a combination of white rock and dirt, which doesn't look nice and is above the bottom of the siding. I'm assuming the wood was put in front of the siding to protect it, but yard debris/moisture is probably getting in the cracks and damaging the siding. I'm thinking of removing dirt till it is 6ish inches below siding then removing the boards. After this I would probably put in new rocks. At some point it might be nice to have tree that wouldn't grow too big. Is this a reasonable approach? Any other recommendations?

Nothing to add besides before you do anything, make sure you have proper drainage. That’s probably what caused the issue to begin with

A couple tassel ferns would look nice in there.

perfect place for bamboo with a rhizome barrier. Very Japanese tea garden looking place you got there.

You could probably fit a porta John in there. Outdoor shower would be cool too though
