A Bolton garden centre is encouraging gardeners to take a fresh look at their outdoor spaces before spring planting begins.
British Garden Centres, the UK’s largest family-owned garden centre group, has launched its Make It Bloom campaign.
It has a centre on Wigan Road – Bolton Garden Centre.
The team are offering straightforward advice to help gardeners make the most of their outdoor spaces by understanding factors such as sunlight, garden direction, and plant labels.
Julian Palphramand, head of plants at British Garden Centres, said: “There’s no such thing as a bad garden – it’s simply about understanding what you’re working with.
“Once you know how the sun moves across your space, choosing the right plants becomes much easier, and gardening instantly feels more achievable.”
The company advises that one of the most important, yet often overlooked, steps in gardening is knowing whether a garden faces north, south, east, or west.
South-facing gardens enjoy sunlight for most of the day, making them ideal for a wide variety of flowering plants.
North-facing gardens receive less direct sunlight but are perfect for shade-loving plants and dense foliage.
East-facing gardens benefit from gentle morning light, while west-facing gardens enjoy warmer afternoon and evening sun—each creating unique growing conditions.
In addition to understanding sunlight direction, gardeners are urged to pay attention to the symbols displayed on plant labels and in-store signage, which indicate whether a plant prefers full sun, partial shade, or full shade.
By combining this symbol guidance with garden orientation, customers can feel more confident that their plants will thrive.
The business was launched in 1990 by brothers Charles and Robert Stubbs with the opening of Woodthorpe Garden Centre.
Mr Palphramand said taking time to understand your outdoor space could make gardening more enjoyable and rewarding.
He said: “Whether planting up a sunny border or brightening a shady corner, getting to know your garden is the simple first step to helping it truly bloom this spring.”
The Make It Bloom campaign focuses on practical, confidence-boosting advice for gardeners of all experience levels.
