any tips or advice on raising turkeys would be much appreciated!

been raising chickens, ducks and geese for a couple decades but never any turkeys but have been thinking about it for a couple years.

well I ran to town this morning for supplies and tractor supply had turkeys so now I have 3 baby bronze turkeys. had to slap together a quick brooder since I have chicks in my main brooder. old dog crates work great for tops to keep the cats out and I use the door panels for easy access.

Awesome! I’ve got my first 3 turkeys arriving in a few days too, I’m excited. Same as you, I’ve spent many years with chickens, ducks, and geese, but never turkeys until now. Gonna be an adventure

Baby turkeys try to kill themselves at literally every turn. Don’t let them anywhere near any water they can stand in. Like basically ever. I’ve had them (once they’re bigger!!) free range and down themselves in LITERAL puddles in the yard.

They will need a high protein starter and then feed when their older. Get game bird starter instead of chicken starter. Game bird has a higher protein percentage. Also they take a bit longer to reach full size. Especially if they are a heritage breed. If you have any females they’ll start laying eggs at 6 to 8 months. Turkeys lay eggs to reproduce, so they wont lay every day. Mine lay once a year in Spring, and will lay for 2 months(or more) if I keep taking the eggs.
