A popular pub on the outskirts of Exeter is beginning a new chapter by taking inspiration from its past. The Three Horseshoes at Cowley has long been popular with travellers on the Crediton road and visitors to Bernaville Nurseries garden centre.

For the past decade or so it has been known as The Stables but that name has now been ditched. The team has reverted to the name by which it was known for generations.

Workmen are still putting the finishing touches to a refurbishment. A soft opening is planned this weekend.

Posts online suggest the owners want to reconnect the traditional pub to the community. The new website showcases old photos.

It says: “The Three Horseshoes is a classic Devon country pub in Cowley, just five minutes from Exeter and 10 from Crediton. Formerly The Stables, we are reopening with a fresh chapter rooted in local history and honest hospitality.

“Expect proper pints, seasonal food, and a relaxed countryside welcome. Whether you are joining us for a quiet drink, Sunday lunch, or a gathering with friends, this is a pub built on tradition, good service, and community. Follow our reopening journey and book ahead for food, functions and events.”

The building has been part of Cowley life for generations. The owners say they want to ‘keep that spirit and bring it back with a fresh start as Three Horseshoes’.

Updates have been posted on Facebook. The latest says: “The kitchen is still being repaired and the full food offer is still to come, so this is very much a relaxed soft opening rather than a big polished launch. We did not want to overpromise, we’d much rather get the doors open, pour some drinks, and meet you properly.

“This weekend is really about that. Come for a drink. Come and have a nose around. Come and meet the new team behind The Three Horseshoes, formerly The Stables.”

There has been an overwhelmingly positive response from people.
