The Pilea on the right was repotted by my flatmate, in a very rocky soil that I have no idea where she found. The soil has no water retention ability: water goes straight through and the soil is bone-dry the next morning. It's also in a terracotta pot, which doesn't help. The one on the right was repotted by me in a humus-rich with perlite, in a plastic pot. Both pups were roughly the same size and repotted around the same time (2-3 months ago), and get about the same amount of light.
I find the contrast really impressive and a good cautionary tale for people who just do whatever with their plants and get disappointed when they don't thrive (looking at you r/plantclinic)

Someone told me these need full light. So I moved them all outside for the spring and summer. Now the leaves are turning all brown and moldy looking. Not sure what to do
I think that the more important thing is to use a pot and soil which suit yours routines. For example, if you are a chronic underwaterer, use something that helps to hold water and vice versa.
Typical grower don’t realize how bad our indoor lighting truly is and may consider something as bright when it isn’t from the plant’s perspective.
Good lighting is more important imo. These sat in a much further away from a window and they didnt do wel, almost dead! So i moved it next to the window with white curtains. And they are really thriving now! Really big and thick leaves even in a cold, grey climate!

What about the one on the left? You mention the right twice.
