Now the weather is warming up (April), your seedlings are going to start putting on a huge amount of growth. And once they’ve developed their true leaves, they can no longer sustain themselves on what’s stored in the seed.
From this point on, they’re relying on you to supply the nutrition they need. So if your seedlings are looking pale, yellowing, or growth has slowed right down, they’re hungry! Although ‘ideally’ you want to feed them weekly (if you can remember 🤯), rather than wait for them to show any signs of struggle.
What makes seaweed so perfect at this stage is that it contains natural growth hormones, which actively encourage root growth. Strong roots now means stronger, more resilient plants later. It’s gentle enough that it won’t overwhelm young seedlings, and because you’re diluting it to half strength, there’s almost no risk of overfeeding.
Pour your diluted feed into a tray and sit your seedlings in it from underneath for about twenty minutes. Don’t feed from above – wet surfaces encourage damping off. The roots draw the feed up from below, which trains them to grow downwards.
Once your plants are more established and start producing flower buds, we switch to a different feed that supports blooming. But right now, seaweed is exactly what they need.
This bottle was kindly sent to me by @enviiuk but in truth it’s a seaweed feed I’ve been using for two + years so it was a gift I was exceptionally happy to accept!

The liquid seaweed feed, in fact any feed, must be heavy diluted otherwise will burn, scorch the roots and will die. However usually use this method when the second set of true leaves appearing, not nesscariliy the first true leaves as young seedling plants but this depends on the type of hardiness rate of the plant as all vary. Young new seedling plants do not like to be overwhelmed with nutrients and over watered, create early dampening and death.
Will start to do this. Am hoping to start sowing this week. Bit late, but hopefully they'll soon catch up!

Thank you for the lesson 😁.
Thanks so much. I was doing the exact opposite 😂 I just planted seeds on the weekend! YouTube was watching and listening to me😅
I haven't even planted my seedlings in zone 5 yet and it seems everyone has the Holy Grail of answers and advice. Granted there is good information, but how about we just stop with the your doing everything wrong nonsense unless you do it my way.

Hmmm. I cannot say I agree with this. I aim to minimise non-organic inputs, and seedlings should be able to get all they need from good compast with high levels of organic matter. For me that is a mix of bought-in peat-free compost and my own seived compost. It will not push them on unnaturally, but they flourish nonetheless.

Can I ask – i had understood seaweed not to be a 'feed' per se, but more of a growth activator. So whereas fertiliser is growth, I had thought if seaweed as more like vitamins and minerals that support the wider health and resilience of the plant, and encourages growth (but doesn't actively support it via "food").
