Gardeners’ World viewers tuned into BBC Two this evening to see where presenter Monty Don would take them for another episode of the horticultural programme. However, as the episode got underway, fans were quick to criticise the content, with some even “switching off”. During tonight’s (Friday, April 17) edition of the show, Monty and the team were talking about London’s royal parks, with the episode focusing on the new Queen Elizabeth II Garden in Regent’s Park and behind-the-scenes conservation work at Kew Gardens.
“Regent’s Park remained a floral powerhouse until 1914,” gardens historian Advolly Richmond said, “When World War One changed everything.”
She continued: “Right in the heart of the park, the Government built an enormous sorting centre, sending out mail to the troops out on the front line. It was the largest wooden building in the world and covered over five acres. By 1930, Queen Mary brought new plants and an abumdance of flowers back to the park.”
The star explained one of the biggest rose gardens in the world was created, but BBC viewers took to X to share their concerns about the installation.
One person penned: “Come on #GardenersWorld – give us a regular back garden, please!” A second added: “Absolutely crap tonight…. Sorry switched off. This isn’t gardening #gardenersworld.”
A third remarked: “What are they going to do when the daffodils and tulips die back? waste of an episode, increasingly feel the programme has lost its way #GardenersWorld.”
A fourth said: “What a woke pile of sh**e tonight’s episode is, even Monty was shocked #gardenersworld.”
Despite the backlash, one fan said: ” Oh my word what a collection of magnolia, quite stunning, so beautiful. One couldn’t help but be impressed!” Someone else penned: “That’s a lot of bulbs, well done to the volunteers.”
