Personally, I would not place any mesemb in a tray of water. Instead, remove the plant from its container and gently shake off any excess grit. Take a pic of the root system and post here.

Your lithops has an infestation of scale, use a q-tip with isopropyl alcohol to wipe them off. Also it looks like there is a new set of leaves inside getting ready to come out, unless this was a severely etiolated lithops that is now really thirsty, but I’m leaning towards splitting

Use diluted isopropyl alcohol and rub them off with a q-tip! Or use an insecticidal soap but be careful about getting water inside the fissure.
