It is a busy stretch at Darby Creek Nursery as they gear up for their biggest weekend of the season. Andrew Buck Michael caught up with Jeff Turnbull, who says the garden center is packed with inventory ahead of the Flower Power Happy Hour on Friday, April 24, followed by the Open House on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26.
This weekend, they are also featuring a sale on edibles. That includes a wide variety of plants you can grow and eat, like fruit trees, onion sets, potatoes, and herbs. It is a great time to get a jump start on your garden.
We also tackled a couple of viewer questions. One common issue this time of year is creeping Charlie. Jeff says it can be tough to control and often requires a clover killer along with at least two rounds of treatment to really knock it back.
Another question focused on keeping hanging baskets looking full all season long. Jeff recommends trimming them back in mid-summer if they start to look leggy. Regular watering is key, and adding a liquid fertilizer about once a week will help keep them healthy and blooming.
