Hi i've had this cactus for over 5 years now and had some questions I was hoping to get help with.
What kind of cactus is it?
I've gone nearly a year without watering it before, but have started more regularly watering it recently, does it need a trim of some kind? I can see new shoots trying to push out from the bottom, is the majority of the cactus dead?
Should it be repotted?
Any and all help is appreciated, thanks!

It looks like you’ve got one pot inside of another pot. I’m going to guess the smaller pot has drainage holes in the bottom. If there are roots coming out of those drainage holes then it needs to be repotted.
It does not look like it’s dying. It looks like it’s really happy and the new shoots are because you have taken better care of it.
This looks like a Lady Finger cactus. If they get really happy they’ll make these beautiful little flowers.
Mammillaria elongata. Looks healthy, probably could use a large pot. Do not over water it.
I don’t know the kind but I’d say it’s the picture of health. Probably doesn’t “need” a repot till it’s overflowing or the pot won’t stand upright anymore. It’s clearly enjoying the infrequent watering and again Probably won’t need a trim till it’s grown past the size you want it.
