Going into The Gardener, I expected something quiet and reflective, and that’s exactly what this film delivers.

The story follows Sabena Weathers (Radha Mitchell), a woman reeling from the loss of both her husband and father while also trying to hold onto her family’s cosmetics company as it faces a hostile takeover. Overwhelmed and searching for some sense of peace, she retreats to a remote mountain cottage where she meets a mysterious gardener who ultimately becomes part of her journey toward healing and self-discovery.

The Gardener (2026) Review

This is not a fast-paced film, and it’s not trying to be. The Gardener takes its time, leaning into stillness and emotion in a way that feels very intentional. It’s the kind of story that asks you to slow down with it, and if you’re willing to do that, there’s something really beautiful underneath it all.

Radha Mitchell carries this film with a grounded and emotionally honest performance. You can feel the weight of everything Sabena is going through, even in the quieter moments where very little is said. Those moments are where the film shines the most, allowing you to sit with her grief rather than rushing past it.

Visually, the setting plays a huge role in the storytelling. The garden itself feels symbolic of Sabena’s journey, representing growth, renewal, and the idea that healing doesn’t happen all at once. It’s subtle, but it works.

That said, the film may not connect with everyone. The pacing is slow, and the story leans heavily on emotion rather than plot. If you’re looking for something with a lot of action or big dramatic twists, this probably isn’t going to be it. There are also moments where the message feels a little too obvious, which can take you out of the experience just slightly.

But at its core, The Gardener is about grief, healing, and finding your way back to yourself. It’s a quiet film that doesn’t demand your attention so much as it gently holds it.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.

The Gardener is now playing in select theaters.
