Hi all, I am in the middle of fixing our small courtyard garden on a tiny block in Perth. Artificial grass was removed in Jan, we replenished the soil with native soil mix and just chucked mulch on top to get us by. We have drip line retic as well underneath which we will reposition once we plant. What would you do in this space? We are in WA and the back fence is East facing. Would love a small tree in the right corner if possible for some shade from the harsh midday and afternoon summer sun and to partially screen the back fence so it’s green. Thinking native grasses or groundcover, a few stepping stones, maybe a birdbath. Needs to be basic as it’s about 2.5m x 4.5m so not much to work with. I want to beautify it and make it green. What would you do in this space if it was yours? It’s so hard to find garden inspiration for newer builds and small blocks with barely any space to work with. We have half wine barrels which could be used here too. Positive responses only please, I can’t help that our space is small and I know that there are absolutely options out there for us with what we have. I wish I could afford a house with a big back yard, but I likely won’t have one in this lifetime. So thank you!

I’d put a handome feature pot with a feature plant like a Cousin It casuarina centre back (with a paver underneath so it doesn’t root into the ground) and low shrubs around it like an incana nanna or the extra small little john callistemons. Maybe a few Dianella for interesting spikey shapes and for the blue banded bees.

  2. My priority would be breaking up the vertical lines of the fence. As space is limited, I’d garden-up with attachable half moon pots, ideally where the pot above waters the one below with overflow. A feature tree would be nice though I’d likely keep it potted so I could move it around for a bit.
