The Des Moines County Master Gardeners are digging in and getting their hands dirty in preparation for the group’s annual Plant Sale.
The sale will be held on Saturday, May 2, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Iowa State University Extension Office, 1700 West Mount Pleasant St., West Burlington.
The event is open to the public and will be held in the event of rain or shine.
“This is an all-hands-on deck event for us,” said Des Moines County Master Gardener President Fran Jackson. “Nearly every one of our 65 members is busy preparing for this event, whether it be propagating houseplants, starting seeds, digging perennials, helping the day of the event, or even spreading the word on social media.”
According to Lindsay Dickey, Des Moines County Master Gardener Plant Sale Co-Chair, annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetable plants and houseplants will be available for sale. There will also be other garden-related items available to purchase.
“We are proud to offer a wide variety of quality, well-taken care of plants, at great prices,” said Dickey. “But it’s not just the plants that make this event special. It’s having our Master Gardeners there who will answer your questions, assist with your plant selections and help whether you are a new gardener or a seasoned pro.”
Iowa Master Gardeners are volunteers who receive training in horticulture and environmental topics through Iowa State University Extension and Outreach educational programs and projects.
They provide current, research-based, consumer horticulture information and education to Iowans.
“This is our largest fundraising event of the year,” said Jackson. “Proceeds from the Plant Sale help support our area donation gardens, local horticulture scholarships, gardening and educational programs, as well as other projects throughout the community.”
