Want to create that dreamy, natural cottage garden look? In this video, I’m showing you how to naturalise snakes head fritillaria so they come back year after year and gently spread through your garden.

These delicate, nodding flowers are perfect for adding a wild, meadow-style feel to lawns, borders, or damp areas, and once established, they require very little maintenance. I’ll share simple tips on where to plant them, how to care for them after flowering, and how to encourage them to multiply naturally over time.

It’s also a brilliant time of year to pick them up cheaply – many garden centres start reducing spring bulbs once they’ve finished flowering, so you can often find snakes head fritillaria at a fraction of the price. Plant them straight out into the garden and they’ll reward you next year. Gardeners often snap these up as bargains, sometimes for just a few pounds once reduced .

If you love a relaxed, English garden style, this is such a lovely bulb to grow – and now is the perfect time to get started!

  1. Cheers from Port Angeles, WA USA (Zone 8b). My very first snakeshead have bloomed nicely this year! I dug them up from a neighboring home last spring (they were redesigning their landscaping) along with some snowbells (not snowdrops, but quite similar!) and ever-present daffodils.

I grew quite fond of snakeshead fritillaria and snowdrops while binging BBC Gardeners' World programs during the pandemic. Monty Don is my spirit animal 😂

We planted them all in large pots, and I'm very excited to save seed/divide bulbs to get them spread around the property! They're such an Easter treat!

I believe the checkered snakeshead are 'fritillaria meleagris', and the white ones I believe to be 'fritillaria alba'.
