Gardeners will be putting their final touches on their garden for a wonderful display in late spring and summer, but it’s not all about the plants and flowers. It’s also important to take good care of lawns right now, too.

Gardening expert and TikTok creator Michael Griffiths advised fellow gardeners to aerate their lawns in spring. This will help air, water and vital nutrients seep down into the roots, encouraging a healthier lawn down the line.

All you’ll need is a garden fork to do the job. Simply use the garden fork to pierce holes in the ground around four to five inches deep.

You want to plunge the garden fork into the ground, follow by pulling the fork back but not out of the ground. Michael advised to repeat the process every six inches across the garden.

Once you’ve aerated your lawn, you can either leave the holes empty or fill them with horticultural sand for drainage. In a previous video, Michael recommended adding grass seed. The type of lawn feed – either summer or autumn – will change depending on the time of year you aerate your lawns.

When it comes to choosing which autumn lawn feed is right for your lawn, keep in mind that synthetic fertilisers use a lot of resources and energy and may harm the environment where they are manufactured.

Lawn aeration involves perforating the soil to create holes that allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots, relieving compaction and improving root health. To aerate, use a core, spike aerator, or a garden fork to ensure the soil is moist beforehand.

Aerating your lawn will help stimulate. deeper root growth, reduces thatch, and helps the lawn withstand drought and disease. B&Q advised giving your lawn a good amount of water to help the soil absorb moisture. It also explains that the best time to aerate the lawn is one or two days after a rain shower, while the soil is moist.

As the weather during the spring can be unpredictable, it’s best to avoid aerating lawns after heavy rainfall, as the ground could become waterlogged.

The Royal Horticultural Society advised fertilising the lawn before rain is forecast. However if it doesn’t rain, be sure to give the lawn a water.

Spring is also a good time to scarify your lawns and get rid of any leftover thatch on your lawn. Scarifying is a lawn care process of using mechanical blades or tines to cut into and remove a dense layer of thatch – dead grass, roots, and organic matter – from a lawn.

By thinning this out and removing it, it improves the lawn’s health by allowing better airflow, water, and nutrient penetration to the soil by removing any competition for the soil.
