David Abazs, executive director for the University of Minnesota Extension Northeast Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships, shared some insights on gardening at the Mount Royal Branch of the Duluth Public Library on Monday.

Abazs shared his expertise learned from years of building Round River Farm in Finland, Minnesota, alongside with his wife Lise.

Established in 1988, Round River Farm is a solar- and wind-powered off-the-grid farm along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Abazs was also a guiding voice at the Wolf Ridge Organic Farm designed to eventually provide all of the vegetables for more than 160,000 meals to be served at the cafeteria each year. Abazs also established the AgroEcology Center, a permaculture farm with a Deep Winter Greenhouse in Finland.

From this depth of experience at Round River Farm and from his work in RSDP, Abazs led the audience through a spectrum of tips, tricks and strategies for gardening and farming. Roughly 40 attendees benefited from his insights and left ready to garden.
