A plant nursery is encouraging gardeners to boost biodiversity by planting bird-friendly hedges.
Hereford-based Wyevale Nurseries is offering free guidance to gardeners, landscapers, landowners, and local authorities.
The nursery has produced an online guide focused on boosting bird populations through the planting of native hedges that provide food, shelter, and movement corridors for wildlife.
John Lawrence, amenity sales manager at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “We’re driven by promoting biodiversity wherever we can and have produced a free-to-use, online guide that includes a focus on supporting bird populations through thoughtful hedge planting using native species that provide food, shelter, and movement corridors.
“Our free guide highlights how mixed native hedging provides the greatest benefit to birds, while enhancing biodiversity and creating micro wildlife corridors across rural and urban landscapes.”
The guide recommends species such as hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, hornbeam, dog rose, elder, and spindle.
Wyevale says these offer strong nesting structure, seasonal berries, and high wildlife value.
The nursery, which has 96 years of horticultural experience and operates from Hereford with more than 250 acres of UK-grown transplant production, is offering complimentary advice to help encourage wildlife-friendly planting schemes.
This includes guidance on selecting suitable species for site conditions, designing hedges for maximum wildlife value, and long-term management for bird-friendly outcomes.
Mr Lawrence said even a modest planting effort can have a positive effect.
He said: “Just one metre of hedging can provide a meaningful habitat for birds.
“We’re encouraging everyone from gardeners with small gardens to groups with community spaces to plant a native hedge and participate in building wildlife corridors across the UK landscape.”
