Are you better off starting herbs from seed or buying plants from the nursery? In this collaboration with Robin Gardens, we break down the best herbs to grow from seed, which herbs are easier to buy as starts, and when to plant them based on your last frost date.

We also share creative ways to use fresh herbs in the kitchen, from herb dressings and infused honey to compound butter, herb salts, and simple ferments.

One of the biggest reasons to grow herbs at home is access to flavors you can’t find at the grocery store. We highlight unique herbs like French tarragon, Lovage, Common sorrel, and summer savory โ€” herbs that thrive in the garden but rarely make it to store shelves.

In this conversation we cover:

๐ŸŒฑ Best herbs to start from seed
๐ŸŒฟ Herbs that are easier to buy as nursery plants
๐Ÿ“… When to start herbs indoors vs direct sow
๐Ÿฏ Creative ways to use herbs (dressings, ferments, infused honey)
๐Ÿ How herbs support pollinators and beneficial insects
๐ŸŒฟ Rare herbs you can grow that grocery stores don’t carry

Herbs are one of the easiest ways to build layers in your garden, support beneficial insects, and bring incredible flavor into your kitchen.

  1. Just left another or several questions for Thursday night chat ๐ŸŽ‰
Found a nest of voles ๐ŸŽ‰. Sad part is they found my last hope of Siberian Irises ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿ˜ก
Oh and Shawnee, Danny said itโ€™s definitely the broad beans that need peeled which I think King Windsor are. Also I think there are a couple different fava beans as I seen one was used for cover crop.
