Looks like root rot. Could be low oxygen in the water, the water being too warm, bacterial infection, or some combination of all 3. I suggest taking your water temperature, increasing your aeration rate, and using a little bit of hydrogen peroxide

Pythium. It smells like rotten potatoes.
Peroxide will beat it back, but the long term fix is a healthier environment. Reservoir temperature is important, a warm solution holds less oxygen.

Its a biomass lol. Root rot is VERY brown roots that are falling apart.
Snot is usually just biofilm or algae. Not intensely harmful but strangling your roots slowly and will lead to bigger issues. A rinse, light h202 soak, and you make want to check for light leaks/invest in something like hydroguard.
