Help me welcome these two to the Philo fam! They were both sharing one pot screaming for me to take them home from a hardware store shelf. Who can say no to $10? That’s what the sticker said when I picked up their white pot so I went with it since Billie was on my wishlist.
“The Philodendron Billietiae, scientifically known as Philodendron bipennifolium 'Billietiae,' is a member of the Araceae family and hails from the lush rainforests of South America, specifically Brazil.” says Happy Houseplants.
Anyways, they looked crowded so I did an extraction and sure enough—pot bound and root system circling the bottom of the nursery pot.
I inspected the health of the roots, checked for pests, sprayed everything including pots and flushed the soil with my homemade disinfectant/detox recipe.
They were conjoined so I used a scalpel sharp knife and repotted baby Billie in the original four-inch pot and upsized the momma into a six-incher.
They love their new aroid soil mix and recovering well from being messed with. I will leave them alone for a while to develop root hairs and acclimate to their new tropical like conditions. Mom only has one small aerial root so I will wait to give her a cedar plank to climb.
I have a good feeling they will both need a repot by summer’s end if I acclimatize them to south-facing outdoor gazebo life.☀️
Your pro tips for Billie care are appreciated!🤗
