I inherited this lemon tree that’s had a bolt installed, supposedly for support. This upcoming season there’s a tremendous amount of ripening fruit and I’m worried about the weight splitting the tree apart.

First question is – would you add a cable? Where would you do it? Do I need to add more of that black stuff?

Professionals will give u better advice but I believe they would not suggest cutting as it would cause to much damage. Perhaps you could prune some weight off of the smaller of the two branches.

  2. Easiest thing to do right off the bat is just thin the fruit significantly and get some weight off, that looks like a ton of fruit for that tree and that’s a lot of weight.

Beyond that reduce the length of some of those branches to help reduce the weight, I’m not familiar with citrus trees so I’m not sure what season would be best for that.

Unlikely that a cable is necessary. That bolt is strong. A pruning big enough to matter- would be harmful to the tree. But the cable is nearly harmless.

My vote is a cable higher up near 1-3 and let that bad boy grow.
