Students will help lead a fundraiser for the Abraxas High School garden during a spring Open House on Saturday, April 25.
The Open House, Plant & Homemade Salsa Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the garden at 12450 Glen Oak Road in Poway.
Mostly junior and senior students will help raise money by selling plants and succulents, homemade salsa, baked goods and handmade gifts such as tote bags and T-shirts.
Proceeds will be spent on seeds to grow more plants and produce, and fish food for the aquaponics portion of the garden.
A primary goal of the event is to give community residents a chance to experience the garden and learn about its educational programs, said Bob Lutticken, an agriculture and biology teacher at Abraxas High. About 80 percent of the garden’s produce is donated locally, he said.
“It gives everyone a chance to see our culinary, farm-to-table and gardening programs,” Lutticken said.
Students can also explain how the garden benefits their education. Lutticken said some of his ag students are working at different nurseries around town and students in the culinary program are working at area restaurants.
“There’s a lot of things to do in agriculture and culinary,” he said. “Students get hands-on learning and problem-solving skills while working as teams.”
Some of the spring produce offered for sale will include tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and eggplant; the baked goods will include brownies and cakes. A variety of student art and handmade gifts will also be for sale.
“Everything raised goes straight to the program,” Lutticken said of the garden, aquaponics and orchard programs.
