With spring now well and truly upon us, gardeners across the country are eagerly anticipating their plants and flowers bursting into bloom over the coming weeks. However, one gardening expert has warned that many gardeners could be unwittingly sabotaging their own efforts.
Adam Kirtland, a gardening expert and TikTok creator known as View From The Potting Bench on the social media platform, has highlighted some common errors that could prove costly, leaving plants struggling to survive before they’ve had a chance to flourish.
Adam has shared his five straightforward tips with Aldi to help gardeners achieve success this spring, without breaking the bank.

Avoid overwatering
While keeping your plants well-watered may seem like the responsible thing to do, it’s surprisingly easy to give them too much. Adam recommends misting plants instead, allowing them to absorb moisture without the risk of waterlogging, reports the Mirror.
Adam said: “You’re probably overwatering your plants and it does more harm than good! Using Aldi’s Garden Spray Nozzle (£2.99) on the correct setting, is the trick! Use the ‘mist’ function to water seedlings.”
Avoid planting too early
Knowing the correct time of year to plant particular flowers and plants is crucial. Getting ahead of yourself and planting too soon could leave your garden vulnerable to potentially devastating frost damage.
Adam said: “By planting out too early, you run the risk of frost getting your plants but by waiting just a couple more weeks, you’ll have plants that will flower all summer long.
“Use the Half Barrel Planter (£5.99) from Aldi to keep things flexible, so plants can be easily moved closer to the house if temperatures drop.”

“Using the wrong tools for the job can impact your results,” Adam explained. “This time of year is all about cutting back old growth to make way for new, but blunt or worn tools won’t do your plants any favours.
“Sharp, clean tools are essential for healthy growth. Opt for a new Ratchet Pruner (£3.99) available at Aldi to trim plants effectively this season.”
Prevent overcrowding
Cramming too many plants into your garden can divert energy away from them, preventing them from receiving the essential nutrients required for growth. Adam recommended utilising hanging baskets and planters to create more ground space.
Adam remarked: “Too many plants in one space leads to poor results – correctly space out your plants for the best results.”
Budget-friendly gardening
The horticultural expert highlighted that gardeners needn’t spend substantial amounts to help their plants flourish. Instead, just a few essentials will suffice.
He commented: “Gardening doesn’t have to be expensive! You don’t need to overspend – a few smart basics like a good storage box to keep your tools clean, a handful of good garden tools and even some brilliant garden boots, will keep you gardening all summer long!”
