Spring has officially arrived, with countless gardeners anticipating their plants and flowers bursting into life over the coming weeks and months. Yet one gardening expert has warned that gardeners may be unwittingly undermining their blooms.
Gardening specialist and TikTok content creator Adam Kirtland, who goes by View From The Potting Bench on the platform, has identified several common mistakes people make with their gardens. These errors could prove costly, causing plants to perish before they’ve had the chance to flourish.
Adam has shared his five straightforward and budget-friendly tips with Aldi to ensure gardening success this spring, without needing to spend a fortune.

Avoid overwatering
While it might seem sensible to keep plants well-watered and hydrated, it’s remarkably easy to overdo it. Instead, Adam recommends misting plants, which provides them with adequate moisture without the danger of waterlogging, reports the Mirror.
Adam said: “You’re probably overwatering your plants and it does more harm than good! Using Aldi’s Garden Spray Nozzle (£2.99) on the correct setting, is the trick! Use the ‘mist’ function to water seedlings.”
Avoid planting too early
Understanding the appropriate time of year for planting specific plants and flowers in the garden is crucial. Planting certain varieties prematurely could expose them to risks such as frost damage.
Adam said: “By planting out too early, you run the risk of frost getting your plants but by waiting just a couple more weeks, you’ll have plants that will flower all summer long.
“Use the Half Barrel Planter (£5.99) from Aldi to keep things flexible, so plants can be easily moved closer to the house if temperatures drop.”

“Using the wrong tools for the job can impact your results,” said Adam. “This time of year is all about cutting back old growth to make way for new, but blunt or worn tools won’t do your plants any favours.
“Sharp, clean tools are essential for healthy growth. Opt for a new Ratchet Pruner (£3.99) available at Aldi to trim plants effectively this season.”
Don’t cram plants together
Packing too many plants into your garden can divert energy away from them, preventing them from receiving the essential nutrients required for proper growth. Adam recommended utilising hanging baskets and planters to create additional ground space.
Adam said: “Too many plants in one space leads to poor results – correctly space out your plants for the best results.”
Gardening without breaking the bank
The horticultural expert emphasised that gardeners needn’t spend vast sums to ensure their plants flourish. Rather, just a handful of essentials will suffice.
He said: “Gardening doesn’t have to be expensive! You don’t need to overspend – a few smart basics like a good storage box to keep your tools clean, a handful of good garden tools and even some brilliant garden boots, will keep you gardening all summer long!”
