Hi Reddit!

I spent the winter before last removing all my grass and putting in native wildflower and other seed mixes (yellow rattler amongst others to try discourage grass regrowth). The end goal is a natural garden/eco system that is insect/wildlife friendly.

I had a summer of poppies and not much else, but once that died back it looks like ribwort plantain has taken over most of the space, and I'm not sure if that's something I should be concerned about or not.

Since this is the first year it's really grown naturally from last year's blooms, I'm looking for any advice on potential issues/things I should look out for in tending for this in the future (cutting timings, plants that I should remove on sight etc). At the moment I'm fighting cleavers that are trying to overwhelm the edges of my garden, as well as long grass that is coming up anywhere the seeds didn't take.

My soil is very dense clay incase that helps.

Really I just don't want to suffer later for not actioning something now.

Thanks!

  1. Looks great. You could encourage more wildlife by offering dense evergreen habitat. Climbers would be a good bet – ivy is an obvious one. There’s also honeysuckle but I think you want the lonicera peri- one not the Japanese variety.

Lots of plantago, excellent for wounds and insect bites in a pinch

The pure jealousy I feel for those who do not have to deal with ticks and lyme disease.
