First time gardener here (not really sure I can be called that). I am attempting to grow a single tomato plant in a 5 gallon bucket. Just trying to get some tips. Here is Freddie Spaghetti so far.

Hopefully you drilled holes in the bottom of the bucket. A good idea would be to put mulch in the bucket.

5 gallons will likely be a little small unless its a cherry tomato plant, but not a super big deal. You may need to fertilize it a little throughout the season to get the best yield. Like others said, make sure there are drain holes at the bottom. You can just drill a few on the sides near the bottom.

A fellow gardener I know uses the bucket method like you do – his tomato plants tend to get heavy in mid season and they used to make the cage lean under the weight, he fixed that problem by hammering a tall piece of rebar into the ground next to the bucket and connected the cage to it with zip ties. Keeps it straight under the weight of the plants and secure from storms.

Are there bees around where it sits? it’ll need pollination either by bees or manually pollinated by hand.
