Hi gardeners,

can anyone think of why the bottom half of this tree has leaves but the top half doesn't? It's always been like this, so it isn't seasonal. What would make the top half grow leaves? Thank you.

  1. Grafted citrus the stock growth is flourishing. The part of the tree you want is dead.
I would cut back completely and remove and replace

  2. gnomesrock

Citrus are shallow root feeders and it is struggling due to the glass surrounding it.

If I were you I would remove the grass to the drip line, feed with something like dynamic lifter (chook poo based fertiliser) and mulch on top (something like sugar cane mulch), leaving a collar of dirt around the trunk so you don’t let the trunk get too wet.

I have used metal edging from bunnings to keep the grass out of the garden beds and I think that has been a really good investment to keep the grass at bay.

As the other person said cut back the dead parts and you should water twice a week.
Hopefully by spring your tree has had time to recover.

Now this is the hard bit, if you tree flowers next spring I would not let it go to fruit, it needs time to recover and put strength back into itself. The following year you should have a fairly happy tree.
