Hi all,
I recently got a new fangled composter. Really excited about it. I had it in a mostly shaded location right next to the house until I read about the slight, yet potential fire danger these pose.
I moved it away from the house to the other end of our porch, but now it is in direct sunlight, which feels like more of a fire hazard. I’m in Georgia, and we are in a pretty warm pattern for April, plus a drought.
A brief TMI aside, I’ve got some pretty awful OCD and a good deal of checking behaviors brought about from fire concerns, so while I think that whatever gives me the most peace of mind is ideal, I am interested if I’m fine to just leave it where it is/was.
That said, where should I put this thing? Way out in the yard in the shade of the trees? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

No, but that’ll get messy on your deck, put it on your lawn at the base of it
I would put it in your yard because tumblers can drip compost juice and it’s a little gross, plus, constant drips on a deck aren’t ideal (although in the Georgia summer, I would assume it would dry pretty fast).
One of the downsides of tumblers is that they don’t get nearly as hot as piles, so they take a lot longer to compost. I don’t think a tumbler this size can even get hot enough to combust. You need around a cubic yard for that to be a risk at all, which is about 200 gallons of compost. This one looks like it holds about 40-60 gallons.
ETA: leaving it in the sun is perfectly fine. If anything, it should speed up the process a bit.
That’s how you get pee on your deck.
I’ve never used this specific type of composter, but fwiw I did once have a fairly large pile of mostly grass clippings get hot enough to burn the skin in the center of it.
You’ve got a nice yard. Put it out there! Less gnats and smell and juice on your porch.
Edit for clarity: I meant the skin that was in the center of the pile.
