found this tree for $60 at the local garden center, and was instantly drawn to this trunk. I can’t tell if it got buried too deep, but the trunk is well thicker than my thumb. considering grabbing it and cutting it down, or putting it in the ground and growing it out some. any red flags? $60 feels like a steal here.

Doesn’t seem that thick and has an ugly graft on it.

Look up the cultivar on the tag and see if anyone has done bonsai with it! The price seems to be expensive to me. But I don’t know your area.

I bought a Sango Kaku in San Diego at Home Depot for about $40 bucks last year. It has a graft but I will only use for cuttings and air layers.

Trap. Dissectum is not that good for bonsai and it is grafted.

  4. Grafted maples are generally now going to work for bonsai unless you air later them

Seems like consensus is a that this is a no, so just to use the thread some: what are some of your “green flags” and red flags for things like this? Clearly I misjudged so I’m curious what folks are seeing
