We bought a house which had had one owner since it was built in the 60s – an italian couple. Pulled 12 tonnes of concrete and metal out of the garden. It was 4 days on the tools; apparently scaffolding is the preferred material for Italians to make a trellis to grow wine grapes on.
Cut out all the beds and borders this year and got the structural plants in. 6 cubes of compost (we have really sandy soil) and a full load of arborist mulch later, and we have our foundation good for years to come. Plan is to keep propagating what we have as there’s still a lot of mulched bed without plants yet, and to mulch with compost annually, mulch with woodchip when it goes below about 4cm.
