I decided I’d like to document and share this process, so steps 1 and 2 are complete.

I have assembled the cabinet to the point that I can without the lid being done.

I see a lot of people commenting that cutting a hole in the top is a big ordeal, it’s not, just find a friendly auto body shop and ask nicely. Took me a couple of shops to find one willing to help. (Picture 1).

Huge shout out and thank you to James at Overseas Auto Body in Hastings!

I then cut egg-crate to fit inside (pic 3), cut window-screen mesh a little oversized (pic 4) and put that under the egg-crate, hot glued that into place with some “tack welds” (pic 5) and then used 100% silicone around the entire base (pic 6).

It’ll sit for 24 hours and then I can finish assembling the cabinet and caulk the glass on the inside.

This is the only part I will be using 100% silicone on as I am not going to paint it- it won’t be visible from the outside and it doesn’t need to be watertight.

The rest will be paintable acrylic “silicone” that will be painted over with several coats of drylok to seal it in place.

I am working on the exact cabinet currently, do you have pics of the rest of the project? What was the reasoning for doubling up the egg crate over the screen, just additional security?
