Japanese Maple Trunk Damage

Hello all,

I have a Japanese Maple in my backyard and I am concerned for it's health. Is there any way I can help my tree heal?

Additional Information:

• Bark near the black aspect of the trunk easily pulls off, very likely all dead
• Under the dead bark I found earwigs
• The coloration of the leaves from the full tree picture are from December, so not current, the current leaves are vibrant and green.
