In this video, we explore how to build a stunning, layered landscape using structure, texture, and foliage color… without relying on flowers. From icy blue spruces and dwarf evergreens to finely textured Japanese maples, this tour proves that foliage can carry an entire design.
Welcome to one of the most beautiful and inspiring gardens we’ve ever visited. We traveled to Boring, Oregon, to tour Iseli Nursery, a world-renowned wholesale grower known for its incredible collection of conifers and Japanese maples. What we found in their private display garden completely changed the way we think about garden design and landscaping.
In this video:
Designing with Conifers: Using form and structure to anchor a space.
Japanese Maple Design: Adding contrast, movement, and delicate texture.
Year-Round Color: Combinations that look great in all 4 seasons.
Real-world examples from their world-class display garden.
Whether you’re designing a new space or rethinking an existing garden, we hope this inspires you to see plants—and design—a little differently.
Thanks for growing with us!

Great tour! I have a container garden and am pretty limited on the types of trees I can have. But that doesn't stop me from trying 😀I live next to a large Urban park so I always give them any trees/native plants that outgrow their planter to plant throughout the park. In my planters, I have a couple types of arborvitae, a Blue Arrow Juniper, an Eastern Hemlock and a Lemon Cypress. I've been on the look out for another perfect conifer/evergreen. The hunt is almost as fun as actually having it.
We drove down the West Coast from Seattle to San Francisco a couple of years back. The plant envy was real.
Living in Clackamas County is such a blessing for a plant nerd. There are amazing nurseries in the area. Everywhere you go Mt. Hood serves as a spectacular backdrop. It was 78 degrees yesterday and I was tree shopping just up the street at Treephoria.
STUNNING!! thank you so much for taking us along!!! I was wondering what the other tree was with the Little Champion and Taylors Sunburst (I wanna say a hinoki – one of my faves), but unsure. Loved the Moonstone and will keep an eye out for those at my local garden places, as well as adding a Monty Blue Spruce…but first, dealing with fence contractors! LOL
That was a beautiful tour.. Thank you for bringing us along. Looking forward to seeing more of your trip. Safe travels 🌲🌳🌷🪻
I can never get enough of the Iseli Nursery! I recognize Multnomah Falls from a visit there in 1986 – absolutely spectacular! The PNW has so many incredibly beautiful natural spaces. Thank you for sharing them.
Nice Neighbors, we both went to the west. I love Iseli Garden. I would love to have that layout surrounded by an evergreen wall, with PW plants and DA roses spread out between them. I love the ending of the parks. Have you visited similar places in our area that you would recommend? As a CA-transplant, I would love to hike or visit parks like the ones you visited.
Thank you for showing us Iseli Nursery! Thats the first I've seen of it. Absolutely beautiful!! I cant wait to see the yellow foliage Japanese maple with the black mondo grass! I already want one.
Iseli Iseli Iseli! 😁
OMG that Shishigashira! We have one. If ours gets that big we will definitely have to give it the Joan Crawford chop! I don't know if I will still be around when it reaches that size. I love that nursery! I wish we had someone nearby that sold their plants. Happy Gardening! Gardening always puts smiles on our faces!😊😊
We had an amazing time in Portland. Christopher is now obsessed with Blue Korean Cedars…. were there any plants you saw in the video that you want to add to your garden?
Great visit and tour. Saw the falls in 2015 on our second cross country trip. Drove 8,800 miles plus Alaska tour.
It was a pleasure to show you both around the garden and farm. There are so many great options when it comes to conifers and a wide range of colors and textures. Thanks for this wonderful tour.
Welcome to Oregon! Iseli Nusery has developed some amazing conifers and maples.
Iseli Nursery must be one of the most beautiful places on earth! All those huge evergreens! The people who work there are so fortunate to see them all every day. Thank you for the great tour.
Major OMG on that one tree where you could play under it!!! That was the most awesome and amazing tree I have ever seen!
Ребята, спасибо за обзор! Хвойные – это чудо.
Oh, Thank you for taking us along with you. I’m in the beginning stage of my garden, setting down my bones right now. I’m 63, so I need to get larger Plants and Trees so I can enjoy them. I’m zone 8a so I have so many options.
I hope you enjoyed being in the PNW! I’m grateful to enjoy breathtaking scenery on the regular here in Washington state.
Out of everything in your tour Monty really stands out. What an incredible garden and the knowledge that must go into looking after it is mind blowing‼️. Great video 🙌
Hey guys! Great tour! I hyped your video:😊. If I ever get brave enough to fly across the country I would love to see this garden! Deanna @gardensglory
Welcome to the great PNW. I hope you had a wonderful time and got to enjoy a few places, especially The food!!
Roby is a busy guy showing many people around
Moss is the icing on a PNW garden!💚💚💚
What are and/or where are the Redwood sand Sequoias?
I live in Bandon, OR and my hydrangeas were still blooming in January.
Beautiful 😊
You need to visit the Butchart Gardens near Victoria, Canada.
I would have to walk under all of the trees! Thanks for the tour! I remember I couldn't believe the size and number of conifers in the PNW- so different from the East Coast.
So so inspiring 😍 definitely getting more trees this year instead of focusing on flowers!
