Recently I got a marbled pothos from a local farmers market. when I brought it back to my dorm, I gave it maybe a 1/4 cup of water (I eyeballed it). I had it in an east facing window (I live in the southeast of the US), and after noticing the edges of the leaves crisping up, moved it to a shelf on the opposite wall for indirect light. However now the top layer of soil has begun molding, and when squeezing the pot (it’s in the same pot and soil from when I bought it) the soil sticks together and comes away from the sides clean.

Ive never been good at gardening. a Money tree I had bought experienced a similar problem, and I’m pretty sure is going to die (it’s at my grandmothers- who is much better at caring for plants than me and is also concerned with its current state).

This is my first pothos, and I know it‘s silly to say but I’ve really grown attached to her. If anyone has had this kind of pothos before (I’m not sure the exact type) and was able to grow it, any tips on care and soil/pot recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

TLDR: The soil my pothos is in is molding and I need care tips/soil recommendation

Indirect light just means light through a window, it should be getting plenty of light. Pothos are very resilient, miracle grow houseplant soil should do. The reason it is molding is because it was over watered and not enough sun to dry out the soil. Let the soil fully dry out before watering, I would avoid a “schedule” and water it when the soil is nice and dry.

I like to mix soil, perlite, vermiculite and some orchid bark. I haven’t figured out the perfect mix yet, when I spllit mine into separate i used 6 parts soil, 2 parts vermiculite, 2 parts perlite. The soil feels light and gets good drainage and holds onto moisture for a week.

  3. For watering: stick your finger in an inch or two. If it’s dry, then water. Right before your water, pick up the pot and feel how light it is. When you water, soak it **completely** and thoroughly. Water should run out of the drainage holes. Feel the weight again, and see how much heavier it is when watered vs dry. The finger and weight tests will tell you when it’s ready to be watered

For it to maintain that much white variation it’s going to need a lot of light. I have mine under a 12 hour grow light and it’s thriving. One of the vines got tucked under some older growth and it reverted that leaf to half green. Try to find it the sunniest non-direct light spot you can or get a light for it

Just buy pothos soil from Amazon. Buy a bag of petite. Mix it and that’s all

If you are getting mild, then you are watering too often. Purchase an insertion humidity gauge and only water when the gauge shows dry.
