SHREVEPORT, LA. – Gardeners looking to brighten up shady spaces have a reliable and vibrant option in impatiens, a popular bedding plant known for its continuous blooms and versatility.
At Akin’s Nursery, owner Jennifer McGimsey says traditional impatiens are ideal for areas that don’t receive direct sunlight. These delicate plants typically grow between 6 and 12 inches tall and thrive in full shade, making them a go-to choice for porches, flower beds and other low-light areas.
“Impatiens are perfect for shade and don’t need to be planted in the sun,” McGimsey said.
However, not all impatiens are limited to shady conditions. Newer varieties, often labeled as “SunPatiens” or “Sol” impatiens, are specifically bred to tolerate much more sunlight. McGimsey advises gardeners to check plant tags carefully to ensure they select the right variety for their space.
For those with mixed light conditions, New Guinea impatiens offer a middle ground. These plants can handle some morning sun but still require protection from intense afternoon heat.
“If you have morning sun and afternoon shade, New Guinea impatiens can do well,” McGimsey explained. “But for full afternoon sun, you’ll want to choose SunPatiens.”
Another standout variety is the double impatiens, which feature layered blooms resembling miniature roses. While visually striking, these plants perform best in shaded conditions and are often better suited for containers, hanging baskets or pots rather than being planted directly in the ground.
“They’re such a joy to watch,” McGimsey said. “They will bloom all season.”
