So far, it’s been 4 weeks and this guy still hasn’t rooted for me. It’s been in a gritty mix under bright light, but all it’s done is get a little soft. Is there anything I should change? Should I moisten the soil?
You should stop pulling it out of the substrate to check on it.

This particular variety is naturally slow-growing. Before it begins to sprout roots, you should place it in an area with diffused light rather than in direct sunlight. Exposure to direct sun forces the plant to expend nutrients on fending off the light simultaneously while trying to establish roots; however, you must also avoid keeping it in excessive shade, as this would lead to etiolation.

Months to root happily, patience is the key,

You already have a fat tap root. It’ll send feeders when it’s ready, it just needs to be IN THE SUBSTRATE.
It makes me think of a korok!
What plant is this?
