Hi folks! I am helping with my kid’s elementary school garden, and have a small greenhouse at my disposal in the Bay Area, CA.

We don’t really need to use it for seed starting since our winter is so mild.. I can just put some row covers over the raised beds instead and start seeds in-ground.

I think I’d like to use the greenhouse for cactus, since they’re fairly low maintenance, and would appreciate the hotter temps in the greenhouse.

Anything I’m overlooking or not thinking about?

Cacti are low maintenance, so they’re often killed by over eager tending. But heat tolerant plants will be good for a greenhouse in that area. Not exactly kid friendly though. I’m envisioning tears and tweezers 😑

Another thing greenhouses are good for is trapping humidity, so you might have fun growing plants that need more of a jungle or bog like environment. You’ll def want to add vents though, bc in hot and sunny place this will turn into an oven.

Let me have her! I will make use of her very much so for the spring starts I’m working on right now! I need to get all my herbs going from seed!!!

Since it’s for an elementary school, just make sure to pick thornless varieties or keep them out of reach so the kids don’t get poked. Are you planning on adding any shade cloth?
