Homeowners are reimagining their lands into spaces that are purposeful and productive. From lawn care to gardening to backyard chickens, there’s been a surge in modern homesteading, a desire for self-sufficiency, sustainability and knowing where food comes from.
Spring is the time to check off backyard to-do lists, including picking up fallen branches and moving matted or piled up leaves to help yards thrive.
Homeowners should also check equipment by replacing or sharpening mower blades and draining fuel left over from last spring.
Tractor Supply offers push mowers and self-propelled mowers for smaller yards, as well as zero-turn and riding mowers for larger spaces.
The retailer will host demo days April 25-26, allowing customers to test mowers on an obstacle course in store parking lots.
Farm fresh eggs allow owners to know where their food comes from and what the chickens are fed. Baby chicks, ducks and turkeys are being sold in stores now.
Different chicken breeds produce eggs in a variety of colors, including blue, green, white and brown.
Beginners and veteran gardeners should start by understanding which plant zone they are in to determine which plants will thrive in their area. The Tractor Supply website and Farmer’s Almanac provide details on plant zones.
Gardeners should determine how much sunlight their plants will receive. Tomato plants, popular with beginner gardeners, need six to eight hours of sunlight.
Patio container gardens and raised beds are trending as people seek sustainability and want to grow their own food.
Through May, Tractor Supply will offer deals on Bonnie vegetables and herbs, Scott’s Miracle-Gro, grass seed and flowers.
