Tackling an overgrown flower bed or planning one from scratch can be daunting so in this video I show you how I transform one step by step.

First I show you how to clear the bed so you know how much space you’re dealing with, including removing plants correctly and clearing the soil of roots. I then reveal my secret to dividing plants so you have more to put back in your beds, saving you money! By adding soil improver to the clean bed I now ensure it’s in the best condition to receive the old plants and new ones as well. Before we begin planting, I always make a plan on paper, using a simple grid system to figure out how many plants and shrubs I need to fill the bed. If it’s your first time, this is a fool proof way to ensure you get it right!

  1. We are about to rejig one of our borders. I love how you are saving the plants to reuse Alan. I'm forever pulling tiny self sown perennials from nicks in between paving and growing them on – free plants!! My favourite gardener ❤❤

  2. Thank you Alan. That was timely for me, I was looking at my garden wondering where to start. Now I have a plan.

  3. It takes many years of experience to make things look so simple. Alans calm, common sense, no nonsense approach removes all the "clutter" and focusses on what's imortant.
    I love this channel!

  4. What a lovely tutorial, done so sensibly & easy to follow, with lots of great tips. Thks.Alan & kudos for reaching landmark channel numbers 🇨🇦

  5. I’m from Jacksonville Florida. I want Alan to know how much I love all his videos. I have learned sooo much. I just started purchasing some of his books. Thank you Alan for your knowledge and how you present it in such an easy way for us to understand!

  6. I love your shows about seasonal things that I find difficult to do, as our Winter/Spring is so brief, especially this year. Thank you, Mr. Titchmarsh for the instructions on how to be vigorous in removing, dividing, and planting anew! More plants, refreshed appearance, all fabulous for this landscape! 🌻

  7. Thank you, Alan for such an informative video. I wish I had seen it 40 years ago! I have been in the "buy something at the garden centre and plonk it in where there's room" camp. Ended up with a miss matched mess. I'm going back to the drawing board following your super simple guidelines. 🙏

  8. This is just what I need as I've always wanted to know how to plan a flower bed properly. Thank you Alan. Love the guest appearance of your friendly ducks !

  9. Careful you don't plant that YouTube award in your flower bed Alan, pretty sure it won't grow unlike your subscribers 😂

  10. This is really helpful. We’ve just moved into a house with beds that are a bit neglected at the back and a completely blank canvas at the front. I’m looking forward to planning my drifts.

  11. Thank you Alan, this was just the video I’ve been looking for. I did ask Mr Domoney for one ☺️ Now I feel confident to try it 😃💚

  12. Hi I’m making a new area in a shady part of my garden where there’s not been plants before. I’ve bought some “eco mulch”, do I also need soil improver as well ?

  13. The grid is great! It shows the spacing and also how to do the "waves" I get it now. Thanks so much Allan!

  14. You're a blessing to this gardener in her twenties. I am learning so much from you and excited to have my summer garden bursting with blooms in a few months!

  15. Thank you Alan, this is just what I needed you're my favourite channel on here and congrats on the first 100,000!! Yay!

  17. Thanks, Alan, for doing this video. I can't tell you how helpful it has been. I have similar beds full of perennials and a mix of other plants, with no real thought behind the initial planting. This gives me the confidence to replan them.

  18. You are THE kindest gentleman in a world full of posers and ‘influencers’. You talked to my class in a video call with a school from Neath a few years ago and it was truly inspiring! If only more were influenced by yourself, we would all be better for it!

  19. Hi Alan, love all your gardening programmes, I started watching your Gardens world about 18 years ago when my son would ask me if I liked Alan Titchmarch or him, saying your full name.

I am still watching your programme but my garden is not that great. Had some illness and was body shamed and your programme is a therapy for me! I was so hurt but I feel after watching few of your programme I'll be alright.

  20. Great advice. Finally now im retired i have time to create a garden. Moved to Germany and made lots of mistakes but im sure it will look a lot better soon
