I'm struggling to find a clear answer to this online, but which willow catkin is male and which is female? I have a mix of species and I'd like to propagate just the males to limit self seeding.

Images 2 and three 3 are thr "fuzzy" type while images 1 and 4 are the yellow kind.

Depending on what site I look at the fuzzy ones are described as both male then female. 🙁

So I'm hoping soneone knows better than a random layperson google search.

The fluffy ones seem to have anthers if you rub them and get pollen on your hand they are male

They’re all fluffy to start with. If you get a dusting of yellow pollen on your finger when you touch it, it’s male. You could get a cheap jewler’s loupe to get a closer look, anthers and stigma are easily distinguished up close. I think generally the female catkins won’t be out yet as they develop later, but who knows with the crazy warm weather.
