I turned cheap marketplace filing cabinets into DIY privacy planters — and honestly this might be my favorite backyard project yet. Filing cabinets are the perfect planter base (deep, durable, and already the right depth for real plants) and when you pair them with a lattice privacy wall, you get a full outdoor living space that actually looks intentional. This is the kind of backyard transformation that costs way less than you’d think and looks way better than a basic privacy fence.

In this video I’m walking you through the entire build — from unloading the cabinets off the truck to prepping and painting them, building the lattice frames from scratch, setting posts, and planting everything out. If you’ve been looking for DIY privacy screen ideas for your backyard, a budget-friendly planter fence DIY, or just a creative way to define your outdoor space without a full fence install, this is the project for you.
This DIY privacy planter wall checks every box — it adds greenery, creates a natural privacy screen, and gives your backyard that outdoor room feel without a massive budget or a contractor. Whether you have a small backyard, a patio you want to enclose, or a fence line you want to soften, this build is totally doable on a weekend.

Glad you chose rusty color. Will hide any rust, show less dirt, etc. And showcase the plants. It's only paint. You can always paint it a different color next year. I'm a bit concerned about the upright structure not being anchored to the ground. It's heavy and around here I have wind gusts over 50 mph. Would hate that to tip over after all your hard work. Now the wind goes through it, but a vine like grape would make it more like a solid wall. Especially if you only have pots inside. The finished yard looks great 👍. TFS ❤😊 Happy Easter 🐰🐣
very creative! I did like the before picture, since I'm prone to the more natural look, but the after looks great, too!
Love this! Where can I find the triple blocks?
Great Job!!
This is truly jaw-dropping gorgeous!!!! Can you share how. you attached the open end with the board? Also I NEED info on that fountain we got a glimpse of at the end! As always, I am BLOWN AWAY at the before and afters of your work!
Gorgeous ❤
I think this is beautiful. But why not just put them on the dirt?
It's beautiful and definitely a game changer. How tall is Lattice vertically?
Thanks you do making this video — I dreamed of something similar and it’s so nice to see someone executing it!
I got five file cabinets to make into planters. I need to know how you got the drawers out of them. I can’t get them out.
For roots like that, a saws-all is pretty handy.
Okay but it’s going to rust????
Beautiful! Seems like a lot of money spent? Would a fence have been less expensive?
