So… left my property vacant for a few months and came back to this huge weed (or tree…..?) in the backyard..

Apologies for the shitty lighting, anyone have any ideas what this might be?

Location in VIC Melbourne, grown over the summer period from Dec – Jan

3rd photo was taken in Jan 13th, 1st and 2nd photo taken April 7th.

The gardener left it there thinking it’s a tree and trimmed it 🤣

Looks like Kangaroo Apple to me? 🤔

Either *Solanum laciniatum* or *Solanum aviculare*, both commonly called “kangaroo apple”.

Only a weed if you don’t want it, the fruit are edible when dead ripe and high in Vitamin C. Dunno if they taste any good.

Worth reading up on them. They have some interesting applications in indigenous culture.

It’s Kangaroo Apple. It’s a native and a pioneer plant that appears when the soil is disturbed. Extremely vigorous growth which makes many people assume it’s a weed. If you are after a native garden – leave it or if it doesn’t fit with your garden you could compost it. Apparently the fruit is edible (but check). All the best!

Native plant I believe, not (un)fortunately cannabis.
