Welcome back to the Storybook Cottage! After spending so much time away, it’s finally time to walk the grounds and see how the garden has responded to the recent rains. From Walker’s Ridge to Lemon Lane, things are “exploding” with new growth, but the spring winds have definitely kept us on our toes!

[What’s In This Video]
In today’s “talkabout,” I’m sharing my late-spring garden checklist, including:

The Big Reveal: We are launching a brand new second channel! Discover “Of Water: The Fairy Tale House,” a dedicated space for binging all our past footage from the English Tudor home.

Topiary Mastery: Watch as I make some “radical” cuts to our Eugenia topiaries. I’ll show you why I’m opting for single-ball forms on tall stems and how to prune for density.

Spring Tidying: Tips for managing squirrels (the gravel trick!), cleaning up frost-damaged boxwoods, and why I’ve decided to stop planting tulips in pots.

Plant Highlights: Check out the “Autumn Empress” Encore Azaleas, the “Miss Piggy” growth, and our thriving Nellie R. Stevens Hollies.

[The Question of the Day]
I have 20 people coming for Easter! What are your plans? Are you hosting indoors or out? Also—is there a garden tradition you’ve decided to “give up” this year? Let’s start a list of things we aren’t doing anymore in the comments below!

  1. Things I’m NOT going to do is plant tulips, I find they either get too leggy or get eaten by critters , daffodils are becoming my new favourites and there’s so much more variety and nothing bothers them, also they don’t look as bad as tulips when they’re wilting down recharging themselves🥴🇨🇦

  2. Your topiaries look great after you removed a couple of the balls. No guts no glory! 😊Thank you for sharing.

  3. I approve! 🌷🌳🌷
I have several Eugenia topiaries and love them. They did well this winter. My problem is, I want more!
For me,no more tulips or alliums in pots. In the ground for alliums and a few tulips. Tulips are so short lived here (coastal NC ). With the heat and wind, they don’t stand a chance. So sad 😢.
    Great show today 👏👏👏‼️

  4. QUESTION OF THE DAY: The Things I Don't Do Anymore . . . I don't have Encore Azaleas anymore because of the very problem you are having. You will be disappointed in how long it takes them to recover believe me. Also, mine got some kind of pest that was a problem every year. AND I STOPPED planting pansies in favor of violas. For me pansies stop blooming when it gets cold and the blooms they keep look melted and flat but violas keep blooming and by Spring their seeds have spread and surprise you by coming up even in the grass near them . . . so sweet.

  5. It was hard to see you take such drastic measures on your Eugenia topiary, but I get it. They look nice together.

  6. Love the new category!!! Things I'm not going to do anymore. Love it. Also, I think your tulips in the front look great as well as the Eugenia topiaries.

  7. Hi
I’m not sure if anyone else is having this problem but as of recent, during the video a commercial comes up and after it plays it stops the entire LV video and I can’t get it to finish. The commercial also doesn’t have the skip feature normally offered. If it’s me let me know please. Thank You! -Elizabeth

  8. Your garden looks so beautiful and lush! Here in NY, we are waiting for color . Things take forever to get going so our season is much shorter 😢. Very jealous of more temperate areas of the country.

  9. I like the topiaries now. Good for you. Mine may need some surgery.
My tulips are coming up in the midst of the daffodils all the warm rain brought them up, but they do not look as robust after the roller coaster of freeze, warm, freeze we have had.
I sponsored a young woman entering the church, who was baptized and confirmed, so a very beautiful 4 days Th through Sunday, then 11 for dinner. I am done in, but did go look at my garden!

  10. Hi Linda I like what you did to the topiaries they both look better to me your yards are looking pretty It wasn’t a good year for my Tulips in 9B Northern California but the tulips in pots did better than in the ground 🤷🏻‍♀️not sure what happened but I will still keep planting them 😊
