I’ve had two very healthy succulents sharing a pot for more than a year; they are well-established and up until now have been thriving – growing significantly in size since I planted them.

Last week they were both doing fine; however, checking on them today one has turned very dark and its leaves are soft and mushy. It’s clearly dying if not yet fully dead.

Included are some photos showing the sudden and extreme change. Can anyone provide insight into why this might have happened? I’ve removed the remaining green leaves to see if they’ll propagate, but I fear the rest of the plant is beyond salvation. 😔

The first thought is rot, but I’m not even sure that’s the root cause, instead I get the impression that rot is the end result in this case.

It looks like all the tissue has died suddenly, all at once. It hasn’t spread up gradually as root rot tends to. Root rot is more gradual and spreads outwards from the stem, while this is sudden and uniform.

Has there been any frost? Or sudden heat?

Had you recently watered after a dry period? If the leaves absorb too much water too fast, the cells can burst and die.

I can see some yellowing slightly translucent leaves near the centre. They’re not rotted yet, but they’re dead for some reason.

My guess is shock from either cold, heat, or water.
